Modern-Day American Hero: Anna Schwartz

Posted in America, Anna Schwartz, Hero by Economic Darwinism on May 30, 2009

This short post will in no way suffice to communicate the high regard I have for Anna Schwartz. She is a true modern-day American hero.

It is a rare treat for her to make public comments, so I am especially pleased to point out two recent appearances:

Guy Sorman
Monetarism Defiant
Legendary economist Anna Schwartz says the feds have misjudged the financial crisis.

Greetings from American Public Media, the nation’s second-largest producer and distributor of public radio programs.

I thought your readers might be interested to know that Dr. Anna Schwartz, a longtime economist and distinguished monetary scholar at the National Bureau of Economic Research, recently appeared on Marketplace, American Public Media’s award-winning business news program.

Dr. Schwartz was featured in Marketplace’s “Taking Stock” segment, a series of interviews that offer the long view of the current financial crisis and the economy in general. Dr. Schwartz sat down with Marketplace host Kai Ryssdal to talk about the financial crisis, and how the Federal Reserve and both the Bush and Obama administrations have handled the situation, from the bank bailouts to the buying up of toxic assets. (And her report card isn’t good.) To hear or read the interview, please visit:

At the age of 93 years old, Dr. Schwartz still works as a research associate focusing on monetary economics at the National Bureau of Economic Research in New York City. She joined the bureau in 1941 and is widely known for co-writing “A Monetary History of the United States, 1867-1960” with Milton Friedman in 1963. In 2004, former Federal Reserve Board Governor and now Chairman Ben Bernanke said the two economists “transformed the debate about the Great Depression” with the publication of this book.

“Taking Stock” is part of “Fallout: America’s Financial Crisis,” Marketplace’s comprehensive coverage of the financial crisis. Other stories and features from “Fallout: America’s Financial Crisis” are available at http://www.marketplace.org.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

    Warm regards,

    Brad Robideau

Thanks for the heads up Brad. That was a fantastic interview. It is always a treat to hear Dr Schwartz. I wish the administration paid more attention.
